Opportunities and Challenges for Microfinance

As a network of MFIs, INAFI Bangladesh promotes inclusive development through Financial Inclusion. INAFI focuses on three areas such as Financial Inclusion (Microfinance, Microinsurance, Remittances, SME development, Renewable energy finance, Mobile banking etc), Social Inclusion (Mainstreaming gender and women empowerment), and Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Livelihood. INAFI conducts research, develops capacity of member MFIs, organises workshops, develops product and pilots projects through partnership with MFIs to explore innovation. As part of Financial Inclusion and Climate Change Adaptation programme, INAFI Bangladesh has been promoting renewable energy financing through partnership with Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). From this perspective, INAFI Bangladesh organised a workshop titled ‘Exploring Renewable Energy Sector in Bangladesh: Opportunities and Challenges for Microfinance’ on 15 June, 2013(Saturday) at ASA Tower, Shyamoli, Dhaka from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman, PKSF was present in the event as the Chief Guest and Md. Shazzad Hossoin, Director, Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) as the Guest of Honour. The keynote paper was presented by Mr. Rashed Al Hasan, Programme Head (Financial Inclusion), INAFI Bangladesh. Three case studies were presented by TMSS, Padakhep Manabik Unnayan Kendra and Integrated Development Foundation (IDF) on their respective Solar Programmes. The event was followed by panel discussion. Mr. Emranul Huq Chowdhury, Treasure, INAFI Bangladesh & Executive Director, UDDIPAN was the moderator of the Panel. Engr. Md. Ruhul Quddus, Executive Director, Rural Services Foundation (RSF), Mr. Iqbal Ahammed, Executive Director, Padakhep Manabik Unnayan Kendra and Ms. Farzana Rahman, Assistant Director, IDCOL were present as the panelists.
